Working on Newtown was a great opportunity for me to further develop my skills as a 1st Assistant Director. I thoroughly enjoyed working closely with all the cast and crew to create a safe space where everyone could creatively thrive, as the well-being of everyone involved was my top priority. I am well suited for the organisational aspects of filmmaking and loved developing the schedule, floor plans and call sheets.
Newtown shines a light on the struggles young artists face when trying to break into a creative industry, exploring themes of seeking help, performance anxiety and self-sabotage in a thoughtful and, ultimately, uplifting way. Inspired by the music of New Zealand Artist GARDS, who provided the film’s original soundtrack, Newtown connects with younger audiences and anyone who’s ever put themselves out there for their art.
