Carving the Way: Contours of Urban Wellbeing

HomeSpatialIsabella Hurley

Masterplan: In the dense area of Te Aro Wellington, this site connects two existing parks along Victoria street to provide urban residents with more ecosystem services.
The south elevation shows the valley cuts carved in the building line, exposing the area to more sunlight.
This West Elevation reveals the Arts & Culture Intervention for everyday public and event use. The terraces provide indoor living and public outdoor spaces with sunlight.
This East Elevation shows the Nature & Leisure Intervention using indoors and outdoors to create healthy urban areas for socialising and soaking up nature no matter the weather.

This speculative project employs biophilic placemaking strategies to carve out an urban valley along Wellington’s lower Victoria Street. Green-roofed terraced buildings bring sunlight into one of the densest areas in Te Aro, providing residents with an urban backyard. Two existing parks are connected by a pedestrian-friendly valley floor, with water features and natural forms flowing along the site route. Ultimately, the project envisions an oasis of wellbeing and connection within the city.
